Thermoplastic microspheres can be used in a wide variety of applications, but how do know when to choose an expanded versus unexpanded microsphere? Expanded microspheres come in different densities, microns sizes, and strengths. You can use expanded microspheres in processes that use or do not use heat. Unexpanded microspheres must have heat in the process or application to expand.
Expanded microspheres range from 25 microns to over 150 microns with densities as low as .015 g/cc. If the expanded microspheres are coated (like the Dualite product line), they become a non-dust explosion hazard. Unexpanded microspheres before expansion start out with a density around 1.0g/cc and can expand to densities as low as .005 g/cc. Their micron range before expansion is around 10 to 45 microns and can be expanded to over 200 microns.
