How to avoid card clash

Advances in technology can improve our lifestyle in many ways. Contactless payment technology has allowed us to quickly and conveniently pay for purchases at many shops and restaurants by simply holding our debit or credit card against an RFID (Radio-Frequency Identification) scanner. It’s also accepted as a form of payment on some transport services, including TFL (Transport for London). This makes journeys quick and easy with a simple tap.

However, even the best advances may prove counterproductive at times. One notable example is card clash.

What is card clash?

This is where two or more contactless cards that are using RFID technology get recognised by a scanner at the same time. TFL has highlighted this issue in a warning to London’s commuters.

Thousands of commuters use the traditional contactless Oyster Card (London travel card) as a form of payment. However, if they tap their purse or wallet that also holds their contactless credit or debit card, they risk being charged by the wrong card.

There have been scenarios where people wanted to pay in shops and they were resting their purse on the payment kiosk. The payment terminal took a payment from their contactless card, but neither they nor the retail assistant were aware this had happened. Then they paid for their goods with another card and later found that they had been charged twiceCreditCards.com

The solution

At PaperTyger, our RFID product range has a multi-ply laminate that contains a security banner to prevent RFID detection while offering light-weight, water resistant, durability and the superior printing and converting benefits of the traditional PaperTyger line of products.

PaperTyger RFID has created the standard and number one position for RFID shielding barrier. Our product has developed into many applications within the RFID segment, which include credit/debit sleeves, passport sleeves, envelopes, badge holders, and the preferred shielding membrane for RFID enhanced wallets, clutch bags, and luggage.

Using credit/debit sleeves with our PaperTyger product insulates RFID card technology, whilst not impeding its function, thereby counteracting card clash. The sleeves also secure the card from electronic pickpocketing and any scam. Using a PaperTyger RFID product means that you will never be charged for anything that was not intentional.
